Classic, playful and designed to grow with them, this timeless boys’ bunk room brings together soft blue, warm neutrals and traditional detailing to create a children’s bedroom that feels both special and enduring.
Bespoke built-in bunk beds make clever use of the room, while blue striped bedding, subtle patterned wallpaper and nautical-inspired details introduce personality without making the space feel overly themed.
A generous window seat, soft scalloped rug and little fabric teepee create places to read, play and retreat, resulting in a boys’ bedroom that balances practicality with all the charm of childhood.
Behind The Design
The starting point for this room was the bespoke bunk wall.
Rather than treating the bunk beds as freestanding furniture, they have been designed as part of the architecture of the room, with four generous sleeping spaces, integrated storage and a central staircase providing easy access to the upper bunks.
A warm neutral finish keeps such a substantial piece of joinery feeling calm and understated, while brass hardware and individual wall lights introduce more traditional detailing.
Inside each bunk, blue and white striped bedding creates a fresh contrast against the warmer joinery. Layered cushions add softness without overcrowding the beds, allowing each bunk to feel comfortable and inviting.
Away from the bunk wall, Sanderson New Tiger Stripe wallpaper introduces a subtle vertical pattern. Its restrained neutral colouring provides interest without competing with the blue textiles used throughout the room.
The bay window becomes another feature in its own right. A built-in window seat upholstered in soft chambray blue creates a quiet reading spot, while blue striped Roman blinds connect the window back to the bedding.
A small gallery wall of nautical-inspired prints brings personality to the scheme, while the fabric teepee gives the room a playful element that can easily be removed or changed as the children grow.
The result is a boys’ bedroom that still feels magical, but isn't dependent on a particular age or theme.

Designer Notes
When designing a bunk room, the most important consideration is making the beds feel like part of the room rather than simply fitting as many sleeping spaces as possible into it.
Here, taking the bunk joinery almost the full height and width of the wall gives it a properly built-in appearance. The central staircase also feels much more substantial than a ladder and creates an opportunity for additional concealed storage.
Keeping the joinery in a warm neutral rather than blue is deliberate. Blue appears throughout the room in the textiles and accessories, but using it on such a large architectural feature could make the scheme feel much more themed and potentially date the room as the children grow.
Pattern has also been layered carefully. The wallpaper, Roman blinds and bedding all introduce stripes, but at different scales and in slightly different tones. This allows the patterns to sit comfortably together rather than compete.
Individual wall lights make each bunk feel like its own little space and are particularly useful for reading at night. Positioning each one centrally within its bunk also reinforces the symmetry of the joinery.
The window seat provides something equally important: somewhere to spend time in the bedroom that isn't a bed. Upholstering it in chambray blue connects it visually to the rest of the scheme while creating a comfortable place to read or relax.
Finally, children's rooms need space for personality. The small gallery wall and teepee introduce a playful quality, but bo
Why this room works
This room works because it feels unmistakably like a children's bedroom without relying on a theme that will quickly be outgrown.
The bespoke bunk wall provides the practical foundation. Four sleeping spaces make the room ideal for siblings, visiting cousins or sleepovers, while integrated drawers help make use of space that would otherwise be lost beneath the beds.
A limited palette of warm neutrals, soft blue and ivory keeps the room calm despite the number of patterns and details within it.
There is also a balance between grown-up design and childhood charm.
Traditional joinery, brass hardware, classic lighting and understated wallpaper give the room longevity, while striped bedding, nautical artwork and the little blue teepee keep it playful.
The bay window has been used rather than simply decorated. Turning it into a generous window seat adds another purpose to the room and creates a lovely destination within the space.
Most importantly, the permanent elements have been designed to last.
As the boys grow, the teepee can disappear, artwork can change and bedding can become more grown-up, while the bunk beds, window seat, wallpaper and overall colour palette can remain.
It's a children's room with plenty of personality now, but enough restraint to evolve beautifully over time.
